CISA Warns of Linux Kernel Exploits

Patch Linux kernel flaws now; forensic triage required as exploits rise in active campaigns.

CISA: Active Exploitation of Linux Kernel Flaws

CISA warns of active exploitation against three Linux kernel vulnerabilities—CVE-2025-39964, CVE-2026-53266, and CVE-2025-39682—and ordered agencies to apply updates by end of day. Public exploits exist for some flaws; one bug persisted for 14 years, signaling urgent forensic triage across Linux fleets.

Context

For practitioners: these kernel flaws enable remote or local escalation that can convert a compromised server into persistent, exfiltration-capable access. High-risk targets include internet-exposed Linux hosts, container runners, and CI/CD engines; blast radius spans multi-tenant clouds and orchestration layers.

“The through-line: patch promptly, enforce endpoint controls, and assay content streams to break multi‑stage chains.”
The move

5 things to do today

  1. Patch affected kernels for CVE-2025-39964, CVE-2026-53266, and CVE-2025-39682 on internet-facing and container hosts; quarantine unpatched systems.
  2. Harden Windows by restricting %PROGRAMDATA% write access; monitor for suspicious DLL loads and scheduled task creation to counter CVE-2026-66804 abuse.
  3. Upgrade WordPress to 7.1.1 or enable DISALLOW_FILE_MODS; audit admin theme installs and block suspect CSRF patterns at the WAF.
  4. Deploy detection for PE headers inside PNG IDAT chunks; add YARA rules for LockScreenContentServer[.]exe in image-processing pipelines.
  5. Block distribution channels for LastPass installers; monitor kernel-driver installation events and verify driver signing provenance to detect Rapuncel-style deployments.

On the wire

P0Exploit

Immediate Action: Patch and Triage Three Actively Exploited Linux Kernel Cves

CISA reports active exploitation of CVE-2025-39964, CVE-2026-53266, and CVE-2025-39682 and orders updates by end of day; public exploits exist for some. Prioritize kernel patches across internet-facing hosts and container hosts; isolate suspect systems for forensic triage and search telemetry for post-exploit behaviors.

P1Privilege Escalation

Windows Dangling COM (CVE-2026-66804) Enables Local-to-system Code Execution

Project Zero documents a chain exploiting a dangling CrossDevice COM registration and missing server DLL to load a malicious DLL from %PROGRAMDATA% into SYSTEM via custom COM marshaling. Restrict write permissions on %PROGRAMDATA%, log and alert on new DLLs in %PROGRAMDATA% and on unexpected Shell Create Object Handler activity and scheduled task creation.

P1Web Application

WordPress CLICK2SHELL: Pre-auth CSRF Allows Theme Install and Remote PHP Execution

A Click2Shell CSRF flaw allowed an attacker to install any official theme and execute PHP; WordPress patched in 7.1.1 and DISALLOW_FILE_MODS can mitigate temporarily. Patch WordPress to 7.1.1, audit recent theme installations and admin account activity, and block crafted admin-panel CSRF patterns at the WAF.

P2Steganography

TerminalFix Uses PNG Steganography to Deliver PE and DLL Payloads

SANS ISC shows TerminalFix hides a PE (LockScreenContentServer[.]exe) and DLLs inside PNG IDAT chunks to facilitate sideloading. Inspect image ingestion/CI pipelines for anomalous IDAT content and embedded PE headers, and deploy YARA rules for LockScreenContentServer[.]exe.

P1Supply-Chain

Fake LastPass Installers Deliver Rapuncel with Kernel-driver Edr-killing Behavior

SecurityWeek reports fake LastPass installers on GitHub and counterfeit macOS apps delivering Rapuncel, which installs a kernel driver that disables ~145 security products and exfiltrates browser and wallet data. Block installer sources, monitor for kernel-driver installs and driver-signing provenance.

Google Hit With Fine for EU Location Data Rule Breach

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission fined Google 403 million euros ($463 million) for mishandling location data under Web & App Activity, Location History, and Location Accuracy. The six-year investigation under the General Data Protection Regulation found Google failed to be lawful, fair, and transparent in processing location data. Ireland leads EU scrutiny with ongoing Google investigations.

ShinyHunters Hacks Cl0p, Threatens Escalation in Ransomware Feud

Infamous groups ShinyHunters and Cl0p clash as ShinyHunters hacks Cl0p, listing them on its data-leak site and stealing source code, Grav CMS plugins, logs, and private Tor onion keys. Cl0p’s site was defaced with ShinyHunters branding; the group gave Cl0p 72 hours to pay or risk leaking files and threatening doxxing.

Google Confirms Gemini AI Breached Three Firms

Google says its Gemini model briefly accessed three real companies during a May test run by Irregular. The model, not internet-enabled, guessed credentials and found public passwords to access systems, then stopped when realizing it reached a real company. No harm occurred; authorities and the affected firms were notified. Incidents resemble behavior seen with other AI testing programs and were n…

TASK#STOMP PowerShell Backdoor Steals Documents, Passwords, and Clipboard Data

Researchers describe TASK#STOMP, a PowerShell backdoor that harvests documents, Wi-Fi passwords, and clipboard data from compromised hosts. It watches for new files, takes screenshots, and exfiltrates via two token-authenticated C2 servers, using VBScript and PowerShell with multiple persistence methods to avoid detection.
