PHP2SHELL Exploits Target Apache mod_php

In-wild PHP2Shell RCEs against Apache mod_php drive urgent patches and mitigations worldwide.

Bleeding-edge in-wild exploitation of two PHP2Shell RCEs against an Apache mod_php setup (PHP 8.4.26) has been documented. Researchers observed 35 working PHP2Shell shells across three honeypots, with decoded cookie data proving unauthenticated remote code execution; PHP patches were released on Oct 21.

Context

Confirmed RCE against internet-facing Apache mod_php elevates risk for web-facing infrastructure, hosting platforms, and embedded systems that ship PHP runtimes; observed risk expands to cloud, network, and OT environments hosting vulnerable PHP builds.

The move

5 things to do today

  1. Apply PHP security updates that address CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619; prioritize internet-facing and vendor-embedded PHP instances.
  2. Disable session.upload_progress.enabled=0 as an interim mitigation on affected PHP builds until patches for CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 are deployed.
  3. Update Brotli decoders and apply fixes for HTTP2Shell across Node.js,.NET, Python brotli/brotlicffi packages, and any bundled decoders.
  4. Block and monitor requests with malformed Brotli payloads and anomalous cookie decoding at WAF and IDS/edge proxies; log decoded cookie contents for forensic review.
  5. Hunt for webstore loader indicators and block domains manulfie[.]click, neswnsssn[.]click, and deepveindrilling[.]com at DNS and perimeter controls; inspect Magento upload paths and file integrity for unauthorized loaders.

Apache mod_php Enables PHP2SHELL Remote Code Execution

PHP2Shell — Unauthenticated RCE in mod_php on PHP 8.4.26

Two critical PHP2Shell vulnerabilities allow unauthenticated remote code execution against Apache mod_php builds; researchers observed working shells and decoded cookie data demonstrating RCE. The presence of confirmed shells increases risk to any internet-facing mod_php endpoints and embedded products that include vulnerable PHP runtimes.

Brotli Decoders Trigger HTTP2SHELL Memory Corruption

HTTP2Shell Memory Issue in Brotli Decoders

A critical Brotli decoder flaw can cause memory corruption and potential remote code execution when processing malicious Brotli data; vendors including Microsoft, Google, Node.js and Python package maintainers issued emergency fixes. The vulnerability affects client and server decoders, expanding risk beyond single platforms to libraries used across ecosystems.

Threat Actor Infects 953 Online Stores with Loader

953 stores infected over campaign since July 2025

Researchers attribute a long-running campaign that infected 953 online stores with a loader, using rotating domains and Cloudflare hosting to evade takedown; earlier infections exploited known e-commerce vulnerabilities. Compromised stores risk customer card skimming, credential theft, and persistent backdoors in web supply chains.

DreamHost Forces Password Resets After File Manager Incident

DreamHost forcibly reset email and FTP/SFTP credentials following a File Manager disruption; affected users were informed and logins remain blocked until new credentials are set. The provider asked customers to review email forwarding rules for unauthorized configurations.

Malicious AGENTS.md in Downloads Tries to Compromise Codex

A malicious AGENTS[.]md in a developer’s Downloads folder attempted to force AI coding agents to install a malicious npm package (function-color) that pulls a Windows payload via function-flag. Forever Security calls this MALFEX. Codex ran the malware in >90% of tests; Claude Code succeeded about half. The attack relies on trusting folder-instructions and writable web-downloaded files.
